Allow alternative energy system tax credit to be refunded

    Representatives Marler and Thane,

Missoula County supports HB 17: Allow alternative energy system tax credit to be refunded, up for hearing tomorrow morning in the House Taxation Committee. Currently, the state offers a tax credit of up to $500 per taxpayer ($1,000 per couple) for investments in alternative energy systems, and if the tax credit exceeds the taxpayer’s income tax liability, the excess can be carried over to the next year. This bill would allow the excess to be refunded to the taxpayer rather than carried over, which would increase the incentive for Montanans to invest in alternative energy systems. Private investments in on-site renewable energy systems contribute to meeting the state’s energy needs while also supporting Missoula County’s goals to address climate change and achieve 100% clean electricity by 2030.

    Please support HB 17.
