Create renewable energy trust fund

    Representatives Marler and Thane,

Missoula County supports HB 128, Create renewable energy trust fund, up for hearing at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, in the House Taxation Committee.

HB 128 would create a Renewable Energy Trust Fund. A portion of state taxes paid by renewable energy projects (not including local property taxes) would be diverted from the state general fund to the trust fund. The trust fund would be used for the same purposes as the Coal Severance Tax Trust Fund and would be intended to replace declining coal severance tax collections. This bill would not increase taxes on renewable energy. By expanding the trust fund to include revenues from renewable energy sources as well as coal, this bill recognizes that the state’s energy sector is transitioning away from coal and toward cleaner energy sources. Missoula County recognizes that this transition is essential and in line with the county’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2030.

    Please support HB 128.
