Requiring drain plugs to be disengaged to prevent aquatic invasive species

  1. Representatives Curdy, France and Marler,

Missoula County supports HB 152: Requiring drain plugs to be disengaged to prevent aquatic invasive species, up for hearing Monday afternoon in the House Natural Resources Committee. If passed, the bill would require boaters to travel with drain plugs pulled (if one exists) while in transit between waterbodies to prevent the movement of water that can transfer invasive species from one waterbody to another. Current law requires drain plugs to be pulled when leaving a waterbody in order to drain, but it can then be put back. Water often times does not drain completely, and this makes it difficult for inspectors at watercraft inspection stations to determine if the plug was ever pulled at all. Having the plug removed while the boat is in transit will both help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species and expedite inspections of watercraft inspection stations by taking the uncertainty of whether the plug had ever been pulled out of the equation.

    Please support HB 152.

    Representatives,

Missoula County supports HB 152, Requiring drain plugs to be disengaged to prevent aquatic invasive species, on the House floor this afternoon. HB 152 reinforces the need for boaters to disengage drain plugs (if one exists) when leaving a waterbody to prevent the movement of water that can transfer invasive species from one waterbody to another. While this is currently the case in Montana as established by rule, including it in statute will reiterate the importance of such actions for the protection of Montana waters from the introduction of aquatic invasive species.

    Please support HB 152.
