HB 176

Sharon Greef (R)

Close late voter registration on Friday before the election

Comments

  1. Representative Whitman,

Missoula County opposes HB 176: Close late voter registration on Friday before the election, up for hearing tomorrow morning in the House State Administration Committee. This bill was also brought forward in 2014, where voters rejected it with 206,584 opposing and 155,153 supporting votes. During the last election, Missoula County had 975 late registrants who, under this proposed law, would not have been eligible to register and vote on election day. Late registration happens for a variety of reasons and cannot always be attributed to personal responsibility. Occasionally, there are errors in processing or receiving registrations which could impact a voter and could be resolved through this late registration process. Missoula County, among many other counties, has the capacity to provide this service, has safeguards in place to prevent fraud, and has invested heavily in buildings, equipment, staff and training to be able to ensure all eligible voters are given an opportunity to vote on election day.

    Please oppose HB 176.

  2. Representatives,

Missoula County opposes HB 176: Close late voter registration on Friday before the election, up for a second reading in the House floor this afternoon. This bill was also brought forward in 2014 and sent to the Montana people who voted against ending late-voter registration by 57%. This bill would directly contravene the will of the voters.
