HB 258

 LC1467

Jedediah Hinkle (R) HD 67

Revise laws related to firearms, ammunition and accessories

Comments

  1. Representatives France and Tenenbaum,

Missoula County opposes HB 258: Revise laws related to firearms, ammunition and accessories, up for hearing tomorrow morning in the House Judiciary Committee. In addition to being legally unenforceable, this bill is unworkable. Almost all criminal investigations are initiated by local law enforcement. By definition, Missoula County doesn’t know what crime has been committed until after an investigation is complete, and then the County Attorney’s Office’s work together to determine the best venue for prosecution. Local law enforcement works shoulder to shoulder with other law enforcement agencies—local, state and federal. This bill may no longer allow cooperation with our federal partners if the investigation takes us to gun control. It strips Missoula County of one of the most useful tools for targeting the most dangerous offenders, the crux of Missoula County’s Project Safe Neighborhoods work which, by most accounts, was responsible for driving down the violent crime rate, pre-COVID.

    Please oppose HB 258.
