    Representatives Sullivan, Curdy and Olsen,

Missoula County opposes HB 338: Generally revise certification laws of trash/waste management companies, up for hearing tomorrow morning in the House Business and Labor Committee.

HB 338 essentially deregulates the waste management industry. This bill would result in increasing the cost of trash collection in more rural parts of Missoula County and decreasing the levels of services.

Having multiple providers would increase truck traffic from one garbage truck a week to potentially double-digit vehicles per week. For example, in Colorado where they’ve deregulated garbage service, they are experiencing increased truck traffic on neighborhood streets as multiple providers are serving the same areas.

Additionally, HB 338 would incentivize illegal dumping of waste.

    Please oppose HB 338.
