    Representatives Sullivan and Olsen,

Missoula County opposes HB 576: Repeal the renewable portfolio standard, up for hearing this afternoon in the House Energy, Technology and Federal Relations Committee.

HB 576 would repeal Montana’s Renewable Energy Standard (RES). The RES was adopted in 2005 and requires utilities to obtain 15% of the electricity they sell to their customers from renewable sources. It should be expanded, not repealed. The transition to clean energy is accelerating nationwide and presents a tremendous opportunity for Montana, given our state’s valuable wind and solar resources. Missoula County recognized this opportunity when it adopted a goal of 100% clean electricity by 2030.

This bill is a step in precisely the wrong direction for Montana’s energy future.

    Please oppose HB 576.
