    Representatives Sands and Bennett,

Missoula County opposes SB 140: Revise laws relating to the judiciary.

Eliminating the judicial nominating commission, which allows public and local government the opportunity to offer comments, would blend the judiciary role with the executive branch, undermining the accountability across government branches.

The commission does an excellent job finding the most qualified impartial judges when there is a vacancy. Their format has served Montana courts positively since its inception in 1972, and it’s still applicable in 2021 and beyond. These changes would weaken our judicial system and remove the accountability of public process.

    Please oppose SB 140.
