SB 164

Carl Glimm (R) SD 2

Revise non-degradation standard for nitrates

Comments

  1. Sent Feb. 3:

Dear Chairman Welborn and Natural Resources Committee,

Missoula County opposes SB 164: Revise non-degradation standard for nitrates, up for hearing this afternoon, in the Senate Natural Resources Committee.

SB 164 allows higher-polluting septic systems to be installed in areas of known nitrate contamination. The existing law requires nitrate-reducing technology for all new systems when nitrates reach 50% of the groundwater standard, and this bill deletes that requirement. Nitrate-reducing technology preserves development options for other property owners in the area and protects drinking water resources. Elevated nitrates in drinking water can fatally affect infants, and have been associated with miscarriage, thyroid and other cancers, and insulin-dependent diabetes.

    Please oppose SB 164.
