Urge revision of Lewis and Clark trial designation signs to include Sacajawea

Comments

  1. Senator Bennett,

Missoula County supports SJ 5: Urge the revision of Lewis and Clark trail designation signs to include Sacajawea, up for hearing this afternoon in the Senate State Administration Committee. The path of the Lewis and Clark expedition led them through the aboriginal territories of many Native American Tribes as they explored the vast landscapes between St. Louis and the Pacific Ocean. While the Lewis and Clark Expedition is one of the significant stories in American history, it is one of the more recent stories layered among the places and cultures of native peoples since time immemorial. In too many cases, the inclusion of indigenous peoples and their cultures appear as only an afterthought, or portrayed as simply a supporting role. Continuing to expand the stories of history to include and accurately portray the role that diverse individuals have played over time is critically important. Recognizing the importance of Sacajawea through including her in Lewis and Clark trail designation signs is a positive step in recognizing the significance and strength of native peoples as well as women in the stories of our collective history. We support this resolution and encourage the National Park Service to consult with tribal nations in pursuing the inclusion of Sacajawea in Lewis and Clark trail signs.

    Please support SJ 5.
