SB 180

Establish an interim committee on soil health

Comments

  1. Senators,

Missoula County supports SB 180: Establish an interim committee on soil health, up for second reading this morning on the Senate floor. This bill will appoint a soil health task force to explore how the state can promote and support farming and ranching methods that improve the health of our soils and the yield and profitability of our agricultural lands. By establishing a task force, Montana can identify soil health priorities and make recommendations on how limited federal, state and private resources are most effectively directed to help farmers and ranchers strengthen Montana’s soil. Keeping soil healthy is important in Montana, where agriculture is a leading industry, generating over $3.5 billion in 2019. Some farmers and ranchers are already employing practices to increase soil organic matter and protect the long-term functionality of their soil, which also helps reduce erosion, increase crop yields and protect against floods and drought. Increasing the health of Montana’s soil is an investment in the future of Montana’s farming and ranching industry, rural agricultural communities and those who purchase and consume Montana’s agricultural products.

    Please support SB 180.
