  1. Sent Feb. 23:

    Senators Boldman, O'Brien and Salomon,

Missoula County opposes SB 279, up for hearing this afternoon in the Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Committee. This bill allows for unregulated and uninspected meat and poultry of unknown quality to be provided to the public without any substantive protections for consumers. The only consumer notice provided in this bill is a requirement that the packaging be marked “Local Montana Product.” This provides consumers with no information or traceability in the event of a suspected food-borne illness. This bill also creates serious conflict between Department of Livestock wholesale laws (81-9, MCA) and Department of Health and Human Services retail laws (50-50, MCA).

    Please oppose SB 279.
