Missoula County supports SB 292: Establishing a utility energy conservation standard, up for hearing this afternoon in the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee. This bill would establish an Energy Conservation Standard, which is a minimum requirement in terms of energy efficiency savings a utility must achieve each year. The standard would be set at 0.5% of the utility’s total electricity sales, or the amount of potential savings identified by a Conservation Potential Assessment, whichever is greater. By increasing utility investments in energy conservation, this bill would save all ratepayers money. Cost-effective energy conservation is the cheapest and cleanest energy resource available. Investments in energy conservation can delay or avoid a utility’s need to build or acquire new power plants. Missoula County has also identified increased energy conservation as a key component of our efforts to achieve 100% clean electricity.
